The food hall was packed with shoppers. The food hall was packed with shoppers.

THOUSANDS of people flocked to Joondalup last week for the start of regular Sunday trading.

The State Government passed legislation in July making central Joondalup a Special Trading Precinct, which allows shops to open on Sundays and until 9pm on weekdays.

Lakeside Joondalup Shopping City spokeswoman Kimberley McCone said the turnout at the centre was positive for the first day of Sunday trading.

“The traffic numbers were greater than the average weekday traffic numbers for Lakeside Joondalup,” she said.

Joondalup Mayor Troy Pickard said it was pleasing to see so many people in the city centre taking advantage of the start of Sunday trading.

“The huge number of people that shopped on Sunday in the city centre highlights that our community has voted with their feet and supported the flexibility and choice extended trading provides,” he said.

“Becoming a Special Trading Precinct reinforces Joondalup’s standing as a significant centre within the metropolitan area and will strengthen the Joondalup City Centre as a sustainable, vibrant and exciting location that will encourage and attract a variety of businesses and visitors to the north-west corridor of Perth.”

One day, only One day so far, one Sunday so far, now what about the weekday Late Trading, Let us see how this will affect the Small Traders, will they employ more staff to cover the extended trading and reduce the hours of other staff during normal Trading hours, will the large shopping centres punish shops that do NOT OPEN for the extended Shopping Hours. Will the sales from extended Trading overcome the cost of Trading. will Shops stay open and trade at a loss, what about the Post Office's and RAC and Healthcare and what about the Banks???? will we see a whole shopping centre open with just 2 or maybe 3 supermarkets and a single vegie and maybe a Bakers shop open and lo and behold will the encumbent MP be at his office when its in a Shopping Center and why not ok. When the novelty wears off we shall watch the Food Hall slowly close their shops and if not on a Sunday then on a Monday or Tuesday. Wait Watch Observe, lets get past Xmas and into March of next year, watch this space.

The issue for me is that democracy is more important than shopping hours. A majority of voters voted against extended hours. If it was important enough then, its important enough now. Thats how this should be resolved, not by a Premier who wants to impose his views over those of the majority. We should have another referendum.

I totally concur with Mother of 3 comments. I remember encountering a gentleman at the Drovers Market Cnr of Joondalup Drive and Wanneroo Rd a while ago and asked him how he voted in the referendum for deregulation of shopping hours. He said he voted 'no'. I then said "what are you doing here". He felt embarrassed

Lets hope that none of the people shopping were ones that voted no to Extended Trading Hours. As someone who desperately wants them I think those people would be major hypocrites
