SYRINGES should not be picked up by members of the public, says the Town of Kwinana.
Despite Kwinana CEO Neil Hartley suggesting residents should pick up a syringe if they found one in last week’s Kwinana Courier, the council has since changed its tune.
After the article appeared last week, the council’s own Parks and Garden teams alerted the administration that they do collect the syringes and have special equipment for it.
The team collected the needle, which Orelia resident Stephanie Walker found in Mulligan Way, soon after they received the call, despite initially asking Ms Walker to pick it up.
A spokeswoman for the council said the Town’s depot crew respond to all calls about syringes found with a matter of urgency and carry specific disposal equipment in their vehicles at all times.
Residents can report discarded needles and syringes by calling 9439 0200.
