A STORY about a film reviewer who encounters an erotic, maniacal stalker, forcing her to flee to a crocodile park in the Kimberley, is the first production to come from Deckchair Theatre in 2010.
Deckchair will launch its 2010 season in February with its world-premiere adaptation of Robert Drewe’s internationally acclaimed novel, Grace.
Humphrey Bower’s stage adaptation of the WA story has been created especially for Deckchair.
Part thriller and part road movie, Grace offers an interesting exploration of the destructive nature of fear and paranoia.
When Grace finds herself pursued by a stalker who haunts her in cinemas, writes psychotic letters and breaks into her home, she is understandably afraid.
After losing her boyfriend, her job and almost losing her mind, Grace flees the city and goes into hiding at a crocodile park in the Kimberley.
Meanwhile, her father unearths an ancient skeleton that prompts questions about the origins of the human race.
Award-winning director Chris Bendall has brought the story to the stage with a cast of some of Perth’s finest actors, including Kirsty Hillhouse in the title role, Polly Low, Leroy Parsons, Russ Pirie, Steve Turner, George Shevtsov and Ismat Akbarzada.
Hillhouse said it was a gripping play where the characters carried the audience through the journey of the story.
“The play relies on a lot of imagination and on the performers painting a picture for the audience,” she said.
“I loved the book and enjoy the tension and the idea of a modern, confident person dealing with something extraordinary that no one understands.
“She’s working against the odds and exhausting all the possibilities to regain her life.”
Grace will be performed at Deckchair Theatre from February 13 to March 6. Ticket prices start at $20. Visit deckchairtheatre.com.au for tickets.
